First, a complaint: the Kindle price is WAY TOO HIGH, compared to the hardcover prices.But, this is a very useful and interesting book, even to this non-Jew. I have become a more devout Christian and it's upsetting the family balance, and many of the attitudes and feelings she describes in this book are ones I'm dealing with too.I also found it interesting at a cultural level, and it has already helped me understand a little better my Jewish friends and co-workers.Well written, well organized, thorough. The author is almost too careful to keep her personal experiences out of the book; I would have liked a few more amusing and/or poignant stories, like the story about her aunt and the cookies.

After having read and absolutely loved Mrs. Jaffe's "Two Jews Can Still Be a Mixed Marriage" I was very excited to read this book. However, I found the explanations and solutions suggested in the book very one sided and not really taking into account the rest of the family's feelings. I was also very disappointed that the book did not address how to make peace with a family that consideres itself observant, or keeps kosher/Shabbat to an extent, when one decides to become more observant or keep kosher/Shabbat to a different extent. Overall, I found myself getting very angry with the book as I read it and eventually started to skim it, so much so that I had to put it down. In "Two Jews Can Still Be a Mixed Marriage," Mrs. Jaffe comes off as sensitive and has lots of innovative solutions from all sides of the problem. But in "What Do You Mean You Can't Eat In My Home" I feel that Mrs. Jaffe has lost her sensitivity, and forgets that Judaism also requires one not to embarrass anyone in public (which I feel many of her "solutions" tend to do). I do applaud Mrs. Jaffe for writing the book and attempting to take others feelings into account, which is more than any other Ba'al or Ba'alat Teshuvah I've ever met has done.

This one should spark plenty of debate and discussion and that makes it the IDEAL book for nearly any Jewish family. It is no secret that many Jews start out in one tradition of Judaism (Orthodox,for example) and then veer off to find themselves in either the Conservative or Reform camp -or somewhere in between. And even if a family remains Orthodox, there isn't just ONE right way to be Orthodox. Is it okay to eat meat before going to a party which will feature milk items - and, if so, how many hours ahead of time can you do so? That question is just one example of how very confusing the rules can be, leading to accusations and judgments, ramping up the tension level. Who needs that? I won't go so far as to say that this book will solve all problems that come along.No book can do that. Sometimes lines are drawn and STAY drawn. Traditions remain, some of them rigid and unbending. But this book definitely opens the door to more peaceful conversations and even some compromises, perhaps even some "new" traditions (one can hope). It also will evoke memories in readers who've experienced the types of issues that are explored here - from parents with very diffent viewpoints to relatives who were judgmental, etc. A gem of a book and a basic for everyone interested in Judaism, whether "new Jews" or "old Jews".

Great book

What a great book! The target audience is people (especially women) who have decided to become Torah-observant and have problems dealing with less observant relatives. Well, I'm pretty much the opposite: totally secular, and (as far as I know) I don't have any relatives or even friends who are as observant as Mrs. Jaffe. Nevertheless, I found this book fascinating! How come? It's a chance to look over the shoulder, as it were, of someone who has decided to follow this path. I have no desire to follow her, but reading about her experiences gave me new respect for those who do: this is obviously something which works for her, and it works well. Something that has puzzled (and worried me) is that the denominations which are thriving today are those whose doctrines and practices are furthest removed from the rationalist secular society: the Mormons are the fastest-growing Christian group, while the Episcopalians languish. And if present trends continue, in 50 years the predominant Jewish group will be of the Torah-observant. Mrs. Jaffe's book gives a hint about why. Now if only we had a similar book from the LDS...

Good book for Baalei T'shuva to help in explaining new concepts to parents, family and friends. After I read it, I gave it to my parents. Not sure what they thought but I found it personally helpful. Easy read.

This is an important read for both the religious and non-religous. It clearly explains many of the common issues that can come up between family members. She emphasizes being respectful and keeping ones connections with family close and open. A really important read!!!

I bought this book for a synagogue library thinking it would help some of the older members deal with children who have become more observant. This perspective isn't addressed, it is solely from the viewpoint of young people having to explain things to their less religious elders. It would be more helpful if it gave practical advice to those who are less religious. I will probably return it.

The description on the back cover of this book claims that this book will "help you get to the next level of expertise, whether you're a new programmer or a seasoned pro". I beg to differ.For your convenience, here's a brief breakdown by chapter titles:1. Turning Problems into Code (brief intro, no exercises)2. Input, Processing, and Output (6 exercises)3. Calculations (7 exercises)4. Making Decisions (mostly about control statements, 10 exercises)5. Functions (4 exercises)6. Repetition (loops, 5 exercises)7. Data Structures (arrays/lists/maps, 8 exercises)8. Working with Files (file i/o, 6 exercises)9. Working with External Services (interacting with web services, 6 exercises)10. Full Programs (5 exercises)The vast majority of the exercises here are dedicated to topics that should be covered by any "introduction to programming" class or free online language tutorials. The exercises ramp up on difficulty at an absurdly slow pace - for example, the classic "Guess the Number" game doesn't make an appearance until more than halfway through the book. And in the spirits of "practice makes permanent", the book devotes TEN exercises on just writing if-else statements. Seriously?!Even the later exercises lack variety. Most of the exercises in the "Full Programs" chapter are simple applications that deal with some external data store. Instead of a taking a broad look at all the various problems that can be solved through programming, the book just stays within a very limited comfort zone.Plenty of topics were omitted in this book, but really should have been included. In fact, these topics are what truly demonstrates the differences between programming languages and their design philosophies. For example:- Inheritance vs composition (ex: Java and Python are both OO languages but handle this completely differently)- Multi-threading and concurrence (ex: Ruby and Go have very elegant syntax for this)- Common design patterns (ex: implement a singleton in the language of your choice)- Interprocess Communication (ex: pipes in C/C++)- More advanced algorithms and data structures (ex: implement BFS or DFS) ...and the list goes on.In short, only get this book if you are just learning to write code, or have been out of practice for too long and need a refresher. Experienced engineers looking for a challenge should look elsewhere.

I read the reviews and was cautioned how basic the exercises were for those with programming experience. I do have a few years of experience but that was 20 years ago and wanted a book that had practical programming challenges to get me thinking like a programmer once again. The sample book stopped short of showing actual exercises, and if it did, I would not have wasted my money. However, I was intrigued enough by the table of contents to buy it. This is not a horrible a book for absolute or novice programmers, probably would be great for them, but certainly anyone that has taken one programming class or a year or two of experience would be better off purchasing something else. It's a 1-star for the experienced programmer but say a 4-star for a beginner.

I am a beginner student with software development and have decided to focus on python and just constant repetition. I am still learning and this book has really pushed me to just get in the habitat of practice and the "just do it" attitude. I find helpful but only have been through the first couple of chapters. think its a good book for testing yourself

I have read over the book. Overall, this book is not what I look for. The excercises in the book is outdated, bored, simple,... anyway. I wish I didn't buy it.

This is a great book to get you thinking about how to solve problems like a programmer and for learning the nuances of the language you're working in. I am a seasoned iOS programmer and I purchased this book to use as a supplement to reading the Apple materials on Swift. Using this book with Swift is semi-challenging and it forces you to think very definitely than you would programming with Obj-C.I recommend this book. It's pricey for what it is length-wise but still worth it.

This is a set of tasks to create small to medium size programs, that aims at providing programmers with problems to practice their skills. The book is divided in several topics, and begins with very easy problems which get progressively harder. Each task has several additional challenges, to make the problem more complicated. The main focus is to master the reader's chosen programming language/API. And as such the target audience of the book is people with basic to intermediate knowledge in the language they use with this book, because they need to delve deeply into the language manual/specification.

Did many of these things in a course in high school. Its a great refresher and reminder of the different commands I used, and didn't use. Great example problems that test your skills!

Each case provides a systematic analysis of the patient's presentation, from the cause and site of the disorder to the underlying theory of the case. The pathogenesis, pattern of disease, treatment principle, and modalities of treatment (including both herbs and acupuncture) are described in illuminating detail. The authors, themselves both clinicians, then pose a number of questions that are likely to confront the practitioner.

More than a hundred charts organize and present in graphic form what is explained in the text. Each chapter concludes with a diagnostic overview or "tree" that summarizes the process of differential diagnosis for the patterns associated with that disorder.

About the Author
Li Xuemei is a medical doctor and specialist in both acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine. Born in Beijing in 1956, she completed her studies in Chinese and Western medicine at the Beijing College of Chinese Medicine in 1982. She then worked as a physician at the teaching hospital associated with the college where she taught many Chinese and Western students. Dr. Li has lectured in China, Canada, Switizerland, Yugoslavia and Ireland, where she now lives and practices.

Zhao Jingyi was born in Beijing in 1954. He graduated in 1982 from the Beijing College of Chinese Medicine, where he now teaches. Dr. Zhao is a practicing physician, and teaches propaedeutics in Chinese medicine to Chinese and Western students. In addition to this book, he has published teaching materials for his students, and has conducted much clinical research in this field.

About the Author

Michael Reisch, PhD, is the Daniel Thursz Distinguished Professor of Social Justice at the University of Maryland School of Social Work. He has published and lectured widely on such topics as poverty and inequality, welfare reform, the history and philosophy of social welfare, and contemporary social policy, and held leadership positions in numerous advocacy, professional, and social change organizations. In 2013, he was named "Social Work Educator of the Year" by the Maryland Chapter of NASW and, in 2014, he received the "Teacher of the Year" award from the University of Maryland Baltimore and the Significant Lifetime Achievement Award from the Council on Social Work Education.

Charles Garvin, PhD, AM, received his Master's degree in Social Work in 1951 and PhD in Social Work from the University of Chicago in 1968. He was a professor of social work at the University of Michigan from 1965 until he became Professor Emeritus in 2002. He is the author of numerous texts and over 100 articles and book chapters on social work, social work education, group work, social work practice, and research. His current work deals with integrating the concept of social justice into all social work activities. In 2013, he received the Significant Lifetime Achievement Award from the Council on Social Work Education.

I was searching for a book that would provide a concise and easily understandable step-by-step guide to setting up a practical security metrics program. What I got was a disjointed and rambling master's thesis on how security metrics may be over complicated and turned into a program that would take 5 people and 200 hours a week to set up and maintain. If you are the CISO at Ford Motor Company, this might be a good book for you. If you are at a reasonably sized organization and are trying to share pragmatic security metrics with your board, or senior management, this is the farthest thing from helpful. Of the four books I puchased on metrics, this was by far the most pedantic. The checklists mentioned in another review are non-existent, and the section designed to put theory into action are not actions, they instead come up with something ridiculous that would get you thrown out of a metrics peer review meeting, let alone a boardroom. Great for a masters thesis, or if you are in a job that does nothing else but security metrics, or you are recovering at home for six weeks from a car accident, but you still won't come away with much that is actionable.

For the people studying the IT field this book has good information. The forms can be adapted at the real work environment, very helpful. I will recommend the book.

I have a master's degree in information security and have been in industry a little over a year now. After reading this book, I have a better understanding of how to prioritize my projects and utilize resources more efficiently. One of my struggles thus far has been to get buy-in from management. This book addressed some of my concerns by giving tips on how to use historical data and time parameters to my advantage. This is an easy read and the author does a great job of making the readers think by asking questions throughout the chapters. I believe this is a great guide for any security professional, not just beginners!

Caroline Wong has done an excellent job with providing the reader with all the important selling points for a Security Program. How will you know you are successful if you don't measure your results? In each chapter, she provides her own experiences with thoughtful and witty commentary. I love the checklists and templates she provides! With this book, you will get the results you need and drive your program ahead. Excellent, excellent book! I recommend it to anyone who is either entering into the field or others already in the field, but want a new look at how to measure their success.
